New Title!

Well, next summer's book has just received a new and improved title. Many of you may not realize it, but authors don't get to pick their book titles or their book covers. We just write it. The publisher does everything else.

The reason for this is that the marketing department knows what sells and the author doesn't (though many of us think we do). So, we authors have what we call "working titles." Those are the titles we make up ourselves and use when referring to the manuscript while it is a work in progress. After it is finished and turned in to the publisher, they read it and come up with the "real" title.

The working title for A Bride Most Begrudging was Tobacco Bride. The marketing department said that using the word "tobacco" in a Christian title was probably not the greatest idea. Thus the new and improved title.

The working title for next June's book was Sunbonnet Woman. (What my publisher referred to as a "hoo-hum" title and I tend to agree.) So, the new and improved title for my June release is ... [insert drum roll] ...

THE MEASURE OF A LADY

I like it. I'll tell you why tomorrow.

Very classy! Are we to assume that this is a line taken from the book, as A Bride Most Begrudging was? And will she possibly be holding a sunbonnet behind her back on the cover, or is that yet to be seen?

Actually, I added the bride most begrudging line after I found out what the title was. I think in my manuscript for LADY my main character has an internal thought hammered into her by her mother about "the value of a lady is measured by yada yada yada ..." Something like that. I don't remember.

As far as covers go, I won't know what it looks like until they send me a mock up. I'll be sure to post it when it comes in!

And, yes, I'm very pleased with the title as well.

Oo--a real mother or a dead mother she's remembering back to?

Dee,
I have to agree with your marketing department (and you). The measure of a lady is a wonderful title. It reminds me of "Portrait of a Lady." Excellent work. I will be looking forward to it.

Blessings,
Marvin

A dead mother. You know how these historicals are ... for the heroine to be truly vulnerable, she's usually an orphan.

Thanks Marv. Me, too.

Interesting how many romances period have made the parents disappear, and how much better off all involved seem to be then. I'm thinkin' we'll hafta make that our policy when our kids marry, tho I'd rather be an absent live parent...

I love the title. It makes me anxious to know more about the plot.

I loved Bride, by the way. I'm getting ready to start passing it around to my friends who I think would love it. I'm all about spreading the joy of a new author. :-)

Welcome, Val! I'm going to talk about the book's premise tomorrow.
I visited your blog. I always feel good when I trim (though looks like you did more than trim). Still, I always think it makes the work stronger.

Thanks, Gina! I'm pretty jazzed about it.

Great title, and I can't wait to see the cover. I'm sure it'll be as gorgeous and elegant and fun as the first one.
