Coming Home

Well, the college student has a three-day weekend and has decided to come home for it. I can't wait. We saw her briefly during "Parent Weekend" last month, but this will be the first time we will have her back under our own roof and all to ourselves. (I say that with a grain of salt. I'm sure the moment she hits the door, she'll give us the obligatory kiss then be right back out and meeting with friends. Ha!)

Still, it will be good to have her sleeping in her room "right where she belongs." (Though I received an email from her that was written around 1:00 in the morning saying that she was going to try and "get to bed early" tonight. Yikes!) So, how much "sleeping" she'll do in that bed of hers is up for debate.

I remember when the kids were little and I was wishing for some quiet time far, far away from them. Funny. The memories I have now of those times aren't the stress-filled ones, but the poignant ones. And even though I am excited for her and this big adventure she has embarked on, boy, do I miss her!

What about you? What's going on at your house this weekend?

(Don't forget: Our our book discussion starts Wednesday!!)

This weekend is too packed for our leisurely taste, incl a financial seminar and overnight guests, but the food is gonna be great! Dinner out Friday night, Norwegian bakery food Saturday morning (or maybe Russian bakery--gotta decide), pizza in on Saturday night, and m-a-y-b-e breakfast out on Sunday morning! I was just looking over the Friday night restaurant's menu. Hafta decide whether it's gonna be the Pasta Carbonara or the Crispy Chicken Salad. Or maybe I'll try the Oriental Chicken Salad this time. But the Incredible Peanut Butter Pie for dessert is a definite must! :oD Whaddya gonna feed your girl??? Bet Pa Gist will be happy to have her home.

Uuuuuhhhh...maybe it's different in the south. Some of our kids feed us, and it might even be good, but that sorta treatment is so sporadic we couldn't hope to survive waiting for their next generous outburst. I don't suppose you'd share a Ding Dong with the girl?

This weekend begins with oldest son's football game Friday night (maybe we can get a 3rd win) and I'm taking 3 of the kids for an early morning dentist appointment Saturday. I know -- I'm such a mean Mom making them get up early on the weekend. Hopefully, we won't be thinking about preparing for yet another hurricane. Give the college student hugs & kisses for us!

Oh... that reminds me. With 4 kids in the house, I must make a trip to get groceries. Is it normal for teens to open the pantry at least 9 times within an hour? Are they thinking that something is going to magically appear???

And Barb... it is definitely different in the South. Kids feed us? Our daily meals would consist of macaroni & cheese or brownies. Their version of feeding us is if we pay for the pizza while they go out and get it. I could see the oldest walking in the door now saying, "Dinners ready!" :-)

I'd share a meal before I'd share a Ding Dong!! ;-)

Naw, it's not a southern thing, it's a Dee thing. I hate to cook. I hate most anything domestic, actually. My 14 yr old's friend loves coming to our house because it is always PACKED with sweets. And my 14 yr old likes going to his friend's house because he always gets a hot, home-cooked meal. Ha!

LOL about the pantry-opening ritual, Susan. My husband STILL does that--and when he finds nothing there, he goes to the frig. Makes me smile.

You're dragging them out early on a Saturday to take them to the DENTIST?? Shudder and cringe! I'd say 9 times an hour is pretty normal for teen pantry-raiding. The only way it might be less is if said teen takes an entire unopened box or bag of food into their own room, never to be seen again. Our oldest daughter will come over sometimes and cook us red meat, and 2nd daughter will not only pick up pizza, but pay for it herself. But frankly, mac and cheese counts as real food in my book! My youngest son sighed heavily at dinner once after returning from a friend's, where the mom actually puts glaze on the cooked carrots and multiple ingredients in her colorful, taste-tempting salads. I was so proud that I'd used a recipe and made an edible dinner too, but--it wasn't glazed. Augh--I'm a failure as a mother!!
I'd highly recommend shopping in bulk at Sam's for the duration of teenhood, and Miz Dee buying a nice mini fridge and locked cabinet for Mr Greg to keep snax in his study so he doesn't feel compelled to steal sacred Ding Dongs in desperation...

Just watched the Love Comes Softly DVD. Youngest son walked in with a snack thinking it was McMillan & Wife. When I explained otherwise he muttered and said, "I'll stay until it gets too girlie." (He lasted 10 min) A-n-y-w-a-y....I don't think it was totally accurate to the story, but it was BEAUTIFULLY done, plus they kept the Lord in it in a serious way. The point being....you should send a copy of A Bride Most Begrudging to Michael Landon Jr! After watching this, methinx Bride has great film career possibilities!
