Yes. He got the concept of forgiveness enuf to offer it to someone else in a deeply meaningful situation (to put it mildly)--the opposite of the way he'd been living up until then. Might not have had all of his theological ducks in a perfect row, but I do believe he got that Jesus forgives. And saves.

Yep. I bet heaven's full of people who never heard of the Four Spiritual Laws and altar calls.

This is a great question. I wasn't sure after I read the book and kept wondering. I think it could go either way, depending on which you'd prefer as a reader. There was enough hope in there that I think it's possible he came to terms with God by the end. I hope he did!
