You're right, Barb. But it just struck me that each character might have a different take on it. Whoever saves you from the mess you're in, that's your hero. For Solomon, that would be Jesus. Some of the other characters might see another person as a hero. Make sense?
My first thought was Jesus, too. But, after that, I'd have to go with Solo. Not just because his selfless efforts to protect and save Carla were extraordinarily heroic, but because once convicted by the Spirit, he had such a hard time killing for the sake of killing. He simply could not bring himself to do it.
In a way, he acted more heroic than most any character in the book, excepting perhaps Pastor Fresno. But with Fresno, we didn't see the growth curve we saw with Solo.
Besides, I was rootin' for Solo. I wanted him to "do the right thing." He may have still been really flawed, but when push came to shove, he stepped up. That, to me, is the makings of a hero.

Yes, but without Jesus....
Would Solo be sort of an anti-hero? Or am I confused in my terminology? ("Anti-hero" isn't in my 30 year old dictionary...)

Wow. Good question. If there was any hero, I think it would be Solo (he saved Griggs' wife afterall), but in many ways he's kind of an antihero.
