Christmas Decorating

I listened to my favorite Christmas album this morning. Is it too early for that, do you think? Probably, but I so love the Christmas season. For years I went all out with my decorations and transformed the house into a winter wonderland with all the trimmings.

But lately, I've been so tired that I have only decorated one tree (instead of two) and hung the stockings and that's it. Because as much as I enjoy the decorations, I abhor putting them away at the end of the season.

The kids are bigger now and would rather do without then be asked to help. I've secretly been thinking of hiring someone to put the decorations up and take them down. I mean, if I trained them on how I do it this one year, then I could simply hire them every year after that and I'd be set. But somehow, that just doesn't seem right, you know?

What do you do? Do you go all out? How do you "keep the joy" when it's time to put it all away?

I love all the Christmasy stuff, but I don't feel sad when we take it down. I'm always ready to move on to the next season.

This will be our first Christmas in this house--and the first one since our daughter got married. Big changes, but good ones.

Oh! Decorating a new house was always so challenging, but fun. Trying to figure out where to put Mr. & Mrs. Santa or the 3 wise men or the nativity scene. Best of luck, Meg.

This will be our first Christmas with a kid coming home from college and I have a feeling she's gonna want the whole nine yards of decorations. Maybe she's of an age where she'll help me put them away, though?

Um, I don't start the Christmas music until I see snow. Which probably never happens in Houston?! My husband wanted a fake-o tree for years, and I finally gave in a coupla years ago, but insisted on the one with pine cones and doodly grape vines in it. Somehow, matching metal "branches" to the metal post isn't quite the same as struggling to fit a real trunk into the stand, nor is the scent as nice, but it looks ok from afar. I have an older friend who's bailed completely on the tree and cards and only does minimal decorations now that her kids are grown. Don't think I'll ever get to that point. And yes, teens sorta wimp out on the work of it, but it comes back to them in early adulthood!

This will be my first married Christmas in our own house (last year we lived with my in-laws for about four months). We haven't discussed yet what we're going to do decoration-wise. I'm hoping for a real tree though. I haven't had one of those for a couple of years.

Oh, Val. Blessings on your first Christmas in your own home. How I treasure those memories! And don't worry about buying fancy decorations. Some of my favorite memories were of slicing oranges and "drying" them in the oven and hanging them on the tree. We strung popcorn and cranberries and tied ribbons on the branches. To this day I think the beauty of those trees rival my "fancy decorated" ones that I set up now.

And each year we'd go out on the 26th of December to buy up xmas ornaments at half-off until one day we had enough to decorate our tree with!

Be sure to take a lot of pictures!

OK, is there some deep secret to stringing cranberries and popcorn so that it looks really good? When we've tried it, it somehow looks....limp. Definitely not as good as the magazines make it appear. :o(
