Horticulturalist?

Is there a horticulturalist in the house? I have a saga palm in my backyard that used to look like this:

And now looks like this:

Upon closer inspection, it has this huge "growth" inside ...

... that has berry looking things.

So? Anyone know what's wrong with my poor saga plant?

Yes. I imagine it is, but I bet your summers beat ours all to pieces. Do you have saga palms there?

In the Midwest?! Maybe at the zoo, as part of an indoor tropical display. Or Texan!!

I don't have a clue about what's wrong, but here's a forum all about saga palms that might help:

Speaking of outdoor weather, as Michelle was, ours is wild tonight. Very strong winds, and maybe snow tomorrow?! Hard to believe, since it was nearly 70 yesterday! Gotta love GA for its unpredictability, anyway.

We have them everywhere around our house. The growth is an indication that it's a female and that's her reproductive part. The male sago palms always look better -- who'd a thunk it ;-). Although not very attractive, it'll be fine.

Is it ok to talk about "reproductive parts" on a public blog?!?! Since she's a female, maybe if you drizzle something chocolate around her base, that would help? :oD

Uh, oh. I think my yard guys just castrated her--I know. Wrong word. But, I mean, it was so yucky looking and the girls are suppose to be the pretty ones. Are you sure, Susan?

Guess I'll have to visit that link Meg gave us to see what happens when you chop off the reproductive parts of a female saga plant. Poor thing. I had no idea!

*snicker*

I have no idea what's wrong with your plant, but I'm amused by the whole situation.

lol Barb. Dee.. I'm almost positive it's a female. The male sago palms have a cone that pertrudes out of the center. hmmm.. I couldn't think of how else to phrase that.
