Vacation
Well, the Romance Writers of America conference is over and my family is flying in to Atlanta today to meet up with me. Then we are driving to South Carolina to do some water skiing. I know for a fact I don't receive a cell phone signal in the town we're going to. I have yet to determine if I will have an internet connection.
So, if you don't hear from me this week, that's why.
Have a blessed week!

So, I tried to get your new book from Barnes & Noble. They were sold out and I had to wait a week to get it. *sigh* It was worth the wait. :)

Does anybody know any fascinating tales about Miz Dee while she's disconnected from the real world??? 0:oD
6:13 PM
When Dee shared her room with me at RWA National a few days ago, I noticed that she'd brought tons of clothing but wore blue jeans as much as possible. Must be a Texas thang.
10:12 AM
Sounds like a country girl to me! What are her boots like? I wanna see her boots!
11:10 AM
Sorry, Barb, I don't remember the boots or I would describe them in great and glorious detail. Maybe Dee will, once she's back.
12:40 PM
Boo hoo,ok so we'll wait on the boots. So what else happened at the Romance convention? Did people there realize she'd won the Christy? What was the highlight of the convention for you?
6:53 PM
I wasn't there for the whole conference--just the parts that were open to the public. On Wednesday there was a big book-signing deal (about 500 authors in one huge room--goodness, the hubbub!) with the proceeds going to a literacy campaign. And on Saturday night, we went to the awards ceremony and a dessert buffet afterward. Great fun, including a funny video presentation that showed "the writer's life" with clips from movies.
For me, the highlight was meeting Dee, finally. For over a year we've been talking on the phone regularly and reading each other's writing, but we never met until last week. She's as sweet and gracious as can be.

Oh, you asked whether people knew she was a Christy winner. Yep, I heard people congratulating her on it, but I would venture to say that a lot of readers have no idea what the Christy is. Here's the link to it, for anybody who's curious:

Wow, sounds like fun! Will she have pictures of YOU to post on her blog when she gets back?! And they opened some of it up to the public???? I wrote the CBA and suggested they do that at their annual convention. Nice to know Miz Dee's as cool in person as in blogland!
10:14 AM
I forgot to bring a camera, so I didn't get any pics. Dee got some, but I don't know if they'll show up here.
Yep, the RWA literacy signing has been open to the public for years. The lines are really long for people like Nora Roberts and Jennifer Crusie, and then there are about 500 other authors with much shorter lines. All the proceeds go toward promoting literacy, so that's pretty cool.
And that's a great idea for CBA too, Barb. Why not??
1:19 PM
Well I read that attendance was down 9+% this year at the CBA, which doesn't seem like a good thing. Opening it up would be a great opportunity for commoners (aka consumers) to see what the latest is in the big Christian publishing world, as well as the possibility of meeting a bunch of cool Christian authors. I don't know of any venue where a person can meet more than one or two Christian authors at a time, unless it's some massive writer's conference that's not held in my vicinity! The internet is great in some ways, but local physical access to the Christian publishing world--products and authors and conferences--is still really limited in a lot of areas of the country. Just seems like letting regular peoples in to the CBA could help draw a lot more attention to Christian publishing, in a good way.....
1:36 PM
Good thoughts, Barb. I'm not an insider, so I don't know if that would work at CBA or not, but it's sure a good question.
2:27 PM
I'm not an insider either, at all! I just--yesterday I wanted to get a newer CD by a well-known Christian artist for a foreign student friend who's headed back to his home country this coming weekend. We'd been to a concert the artist did recently and I thought it would be a nice remembrance. I called our 2 Christian bookstores--both 30 min from me--and neither had it. 6 other stores that I called didn't have it either. Finally the 9th place that I called--a major secular chain bookstore--offered to get it for me in 3 days. I bit. I coulda boughten it on-line, but then I would have had shipping costs to me, and shipping costs to send it to our friend's foreign homeland. Neither Christian store offered to order it for me, but if they had I know it would have taken at least a week for them to get it, which would have been too late in my situation. All that to say that it seems to me the Christian publishing/distributing world needs to figure out some ways to either improve their service or make up for it in other ways. Letting Christian consumers get a little up close and personal on occasion would help! (Sorry for the lecture....)
4:40 PM
Barb, Barb, Barb. For shame, for shame. Can't let you out of my sight for one minute! ;-)
5:23 PM
Kate: Sorry you had to wait on Lady. Glad it didn't disappoint!
5:24 PM
Frankly, if all we could learn is that you're sweet and wear jeans all the time, that's not very scandalous! Maybe next time you leave we can get someone to spill some deeper stuff. Hey--leave Mr. Greg at home with the computer next time you go away!!!
10:15 AM
Don't worry Barb... I think I can help with that. I'm sure I can share a funny story or two or three.
