Startin' To Get Serious
Our 15 year old spends the majority of his time practicing with his band, practicing by himself or composing music. He sits for hours on end in front of the computer with his guitar plunking down chords on something called "Tab It." Then he listens to his favorite bands and figures out how to play their music on his guitar and/or keyboard.
Lately--within the last month--he started listening to Beethoven. And then, started playing Beethoven on the piano. And that's when I knew things were getting really serious with his music. It was one thing for him to study his favorite metal bands. Quite another to start in on the classics.
Yesterday had to be the topper, though. I was working on revisions for my June release, when from the music room I hear ... On Top of the World by the Carpenters! I'm absolutely certain he's never heard the words. (He'd die, otherwise, I'm sure.) I stopped what I was doing and listened, tapped my toe and sang to myself.
Now this, I can handle!

If he reads your blog, you might be in some serious trouble for mentioning the Carpenters. Oh, the horror for a fifteen-year-old!

LOL Meg.
My 14-year-old plays bass guitar in the church youth band. I love listening to him practice downstairs (the basement is our music room). He goes from his bass to his electric guitar, from Christian rock to classic rock to alternative rock and back again. He's even doing a little classical on his accoustic guitar. It's fun, isn't it??

Ohmygoodness, look at that guitar rack! With a Flying V right in the front! I better not let my boy see that. He's got a Flying V on his Christmas list, but he'll be lucky to get one on a t-shirt this year! Alex is in the metal stage that your son just grew out of, and he's thinking about composing, but lyrics are holding him back. I can't imagine why he doesn't want me to help with those--lyrics are my forte!

Gasp--remember when Richard Carpenter had the Dutch boy haircut when he was young? If you trim your boy's hair up just a lit-tle bit, he could be THE NEXT RICHARD CARPENTER! I'd buy him the Carpetners' A Song For You CD for Christmas, definitely!

Meg, if any of my kids read my blog I'm gonna be in serious trouble. I don't even think my husband reads my blog. Shhhhh. It'll be our little secret!
I have to confess, Jen, I don't always "love listening to him practice." I especially find it difficult to listen to him compose (same stanza/rift/whatever-you-call-it over and over and over and over and over. You get the idea.) Plus, we don't have basements in Texas. So, the music room is right out here in front of God and everybody. But Beethoven and the Carpenters? Yeah. Things are lookin' up in the Gist household. ;-)
We actually laughed when we saw "Flying V" on his Christmas list last year, EJ. He was soooo disappointed when he didn't get one. So, my husband said he'd pay half. So between the money our son made from giving guitar lessons and earning good grades and cutting the lawn, he *finally* earned enough for his half. Then raced home every day from school and said, "Has the mail come yet?" Bless his heart, took about 6 weeks for the guitar to arrive.
Now,I think he actually sleeps with the thing at night. ;-) Just kidding!
Hair cut, Barb? Bite your tongue. Those two words are considered curse words by my son. Ha!

Is he a stomach-sleeper?! :oD
Hey, Richard's not doin' too shabby, even today. According to his website, he has 5 beauteous kids, a dishy wife, gives away millions, still travels the globe doin' interviews and concerts. Your boy could to worse than to be a Richard-wanna-be!

Make no mistake ... I love the Carpenters. Always have.
"Is he a stomach sleeper" Ha!
