Company's Comin'--Time To Clean
Seems like I just cleaned my desk off, and now look at it. I can't even stand to go into my study anymore. I just grab my laptop and scurry to some quiet little corner in my bedroom or something.
But Thanksgiving is at our house. And my office is attached to our breakfast room. It has a door, but it is a French door. So, even if I closed it, the mess is still visible. And I was raised that when company's a-comin', it's time to do some serious cleaning.
Still, it's only family. So, I wasn't sure that would be quite enough to motivate me to clean up. After all, the house is in decent shape and I'll have all that cooking to do. So, I thought I'd better take a "Before" shot and show you. Then, I'd be accountable for posting an "After" shot.
Even so, cleaning my desk is not on the top of my list. First, I have to finish reading some entries for a contest I am judging (due today). Then, I have to make a run to the grocery store for Thanksgiving stuff.
Did I mention I had to move out of my bedroom for two days while some workers tile my bedroom and bathroom floor and put wood on the floor of Greg's study? (So, my bedroom is strewn all over my den and dining room and entry hall and garage.)
Also, I just finished the line-edits for Courting Trouble, so I need to re-read the ms to make sure everything still flows after the changes we made. And my daughter gets home from college tomorrow. And the girls and I are going out to Grandma's to help her decorate her tree on Wednesday.
THEN, I can clean my study.
So, what do you think? Think I can do all that and cook a Thanksgiving meal all before Thursday?

I'm wondering if this is why Mr Greg is out of the country this week?! I think the mess on your desk is colorful and that you should leave it and just get a curtain for the French door. Let your daughters do the grocery shopping for you and help with the construction clean-up. Let son set the table for Thanxgiving so he doesn't feel left out (or both sons?) And you don't do the Christmas tree until after Thanxgiving!!!!
1:46 PM
You need to come down here and get my family organized, Barb. Greg explicitly requested the floors be done while he was gone. (convenient, eh?) The girls are in school until Wednesday and that's when we're going to Grandma's. And I can't wait that long to get started on the cooking, anyway. But I will solicit their help (along with the boys) after the meal for clean-up.
And ... the Christmas tree is already up and decorated. So, I don't have to worry about that anymore.
3:47 PM
Oh my word--the tree is already up and decorated?!?! Christmas lasts a loooong time in the south! Maybe next time your house needs reconstructing you should go along with Mr Greg! I still think you should leave the desk mess--luv the hot pinks and the purple in particular.... :o)
3:51 PM
I'm not the hostess for our family Thanksgiving this year. That means I can procrastinate on the house-cleaning. :)
You should see my office. No, I take it back. You shouldn't.
6:09 PM
Is it decorated with pinks and purples? :oD
8:45 AM
My desk looks worse than yours, Dee! And I have company staying in my bedroom for 3 days! I've already warned my family that I will be "June Clever on Speed" today. Watch out! ha
9:11 AM
LOL, Sandy!
All those hot pink things are post-it notes, Barb. My office assistant calls me the "Post-It Note Queen" and she knows better than to throw any of them away! Though, they don't seem to help me much. But I have them (as you can see) everywhere.
The purple folder is where we keep our corporation minutes and by-laws and resolutions and such. I have it out because I need to have a meeting with the shareholders (aka. me & Greg), which--by law--requires I give Greg 10 days notification of the meeting, in writing. Needless to say, we haven't had our meeting, nor does Greg know anything about it. But, I've made myself a post-it note to remind myself to write him a memo. ;-)
10:58 AM
You'd think if Mr Greg saw a folder that bright, he'd know right away that a meeting was looming! Wonder if Sandy's desk is decorated with pinks and purples too? June C would have a colorful mess, I'm sure, those rare times she had one at all. I think you could sell the concept of colorful desk messes Miz Dee! "Enhance your desk's mundane look, and look like you've really been working at the same time, with Dee's Colorful Desk Mess! Comes in small, medium, or overwhelming Desk Mess sizes!"

Oh dear, I'm just catching up on the "jist" of what's going on in the Gist home! Scary stuff! Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, Dee (just in case you needed a reminder). Is the tile finished? Is your office back in shape? Is the turkey defeathered and defrosted? Are the cranberries picked? Are the pumpkins hollowed out? (Please tell me you don't really hollow out your pumpkins and bake your pies from scratch. I mean does anyone really do that?)
I was just sitting here thinking to myself, oh, I'm glad we're going to my niece's house for T'gvg, and all I have to bring is a salad! (sigh)
Seriously, I hope everyone on this friendly little loop has a wonderful day. It's really all about family anyway, right? If you still have some clutter about--who in the world cares?
Blessings everyone!
Shar

Oy! You're making me tired! lol
This is our first Thanksgiving away from any family and it's a little sad. Except for that I don't have to worry about what my house looks like!! :o)
Have a great Thanksgiving, everyone.

We actually don't have family to ours, but are hosting our oldest son's girlfriend's family (her dad happens to be our oldest son's and daughter's pastor), plus a good friend and her little girl. People that have sort of become "family" while not really being family! It was a little weird at first, not having holidays with relatives, but really it can be just as fun, and sometimes even more interesting. So go out and find someone to invite over, Jenster!
2:37 PM
We have invited people, Barb! lol We had some friends who were going to come from Arkansas, but they were unable to make it. I have two friends with daughters in college on the east coast. Invited them, but they already had plans. Even asked at church about people with no family, etc. We're so new to the area that we haven't had a chance to make a whole lot of friends yet.
Maybe God just wants us to be introspective this year?? :o)

Oh, Barb, I think that's great that you're hosting Thanksgiving for your son's girlfriend's family--and then the lady you mentioned and her young daughter. You have captured the true meaning behind the holiday. And Jen, try not to dwell too much on missing your family. Instead, enjoy the sweet solitude. There's pleasure in that as well.
Be safe, everyone!
Blessings,
Shar
6:56 PM
Actually, I think my husband would have preferred solitude, but the kids prefer a little more action than their elderly parents provide. Plus they know I would have gotten out board games like SCRABBLE and EMPIRE BUILDER, which make them scream.... :o)
8:57 PM
Oh, Barb, I love Scrabble. I don't know what Empire Builder is, though. Do tell. Is it a word game? I am always hauling my Deluxe Scrabble out, to which my kids groan and moan. Too bad for them! Maybe we'll even get in a match or two this weekend.
BTW, I've been in bed for two hours now, but can't sleep. So what am I doing? Checking Dee's site. Am I sick or what??? ha-ha
Okay, it's going on 1 a.m. It's going to be a long day tomorrow, and we have my 8 month-old grandson staying with us tomorrow night--which means I NEED MY REST!
Blessings,
Shar
11:39 PM
Hear that Miz Dee? Your blog's so compelling people get out of bed in the middle of the night to read it!
Empire Builder is a railroad game, but you build your railroad across the country from virtually nothing, so it takes a long time to play. I'm determined to play it with the family at least once this winter tho.
Sandy C and I would play Scrabble with you Shar, Deluxe or otherwise!
8:24 AM
As I told Barb yesterday, it's always my goal to get 300 points when playing Scrabble (2 person Scrabble). Today is my lucky day! My friend Pam and I are gonna play! Woo-Hoo!
If you need a last minute KILLER CRANBERRY SAUCE recipe, Dee, go to my blog: http://reluctantentertainer.blogspot.com.
It's to DIE FOR! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!
10:28 AM
Happy Thanksgiving Dee and family...and the rest of the gang here!
10:58 AM
Hey, there. Wanted to stop in and wish everybody a happy Thanksgiving.
I didn't get my desk clean, but we had a really wonderful time with the family. The best news of all is Greg called from Scotland and said he was coming home early. He'll be here Saturday! Yippee!
I've got stories and pictures to share from our big day and want to hear all about yours (who won the scrabble games, who tried Sandy's recipes, who hollowed out pumpkins, etc).
So let's meet back here on Monday. Meanwhile, keep up the chatter and have a great and safe holiday weekend.
10:28 PM
I won dish duty at our Thanxgiving....
Scotland?? Mr Greg was in Scotland?? I'm of the clan Cameron, er at least my Grandma was. Did he get to go any place cool or do anything wild and crazily Scottish???
9:44 AM
No. He did at first, but he goes so often now that he just works, eats and sleeps until it is time to come back home.
I've never been there. Have any of y'all?
P.S. He's lurking because he harrassed me for not having my desk clean for Thanksgiving and he wouldn't have known that unless he'd been reading my blog. I told him while he was sitting around at the airport he should learn how to post a comment. But, no. It's too complicated, he says. He'd rather enter the contest and then gripe because we keep deleting him from the entrants. Ha!
12:33 PM
Someday I'll go to Scotland, but then I'd wanna go waaaaaaaaaaay up north to the late Queen Mother's castle at Orkney.
Come on, Mr Greg, you already won the biggest contest when Miz Dee said she'd marry you! Surely an internationally-traveling biznessman can learn how to comment on a blog?!
1:46 PM
You tell 'im, Barb! :-)
