Most of my costumes were made for me. I had a schoolmarms costume that was made for me by the gal in charge of the old sacramento school house museum, when I was a docent for them.
However, when I went to an 80's party we did go the thrift store to get everything we needed.
Also its a good idea to raid your mom's closet. My renfaire costume basically came from an old night shirt my mom had, with a skirt I talked my friend into making for me. And a bodice someone gave me.
